Documentary Filmmaking Workshop

from 6th June to end July, 2023
(20 sessions of 4 hours each)

COURSE OVERVIEW
The workshop, will be conducted in Mumbai. The class size will be small so as to enable individual attention. Instruction will be in Hindi and English. Participants are expected to put in extra hours for research, reading, previewing films and extensive field work.

COURSE CONTENT
A basic orientation towards documentary filmmaking covering poetic, observational, experimental and ethnographic film form. Inputs will be given on script development, camera, sound and editing. Documentary ethics and subjectivity will get critical importance. The participants will be encouraged to explore their neighbourhood in Mumbai, personal stories and their own 'self' leading towards a narrative. By the end of the course, each participant will make a short documentary independently.
The workshop is aimed at aspiring, early career media students and people who are curious about 'life' and the film medium.

Course Fee is 24000 payable in 2 instalments. (12000 on joining the course and 12,000 after a month). In addition each participant is expected to have their mobile or DSLR or camcorders for shooting. You may be required to buy simple microphones. You should also have access to a laptop/ PC with basic editing software. Please note that fees once paid will not be refunded unless the course is called off due to unforeseen circumstances.

Course conducted by Pankaj Rishi Kumar. - An alumni of FTII, Pankaj has been making documentaries for last 26 years. His last film ‘Janani’s Juliet’ was India’s official entry to Oscars. His films have screened at major film festivals all over the world. He is a visiting faculty at Whistling Woods International. He is a regular mentor with Let’sdoc -- A DRI initiative. He conducts regular workshops at FTII, SRFTI, NID, SUPVA (Rohtak) and MIT (Pune).
